Color Picker & Converter

Interactive visual color picker with bidirectional HEX (#RRGGBB) and RGB conversion and clipboard copy.

How It Works & Methodology

Digital screens represent colors using additive red, green, and blue (RGB) light channels ranging from 0 to 255. In web development, RGB values are frequently expressed as hexadecimal notation (#RRGGBB), where each two-digit hex pair represents 8 bits (00 to FF) per channel.

Hex to RGB: #RRGGBB -> R = parseInt(RR, 16), G = parseInt(GG, 16), B = parseInt(BB, 16) RGB to Hex: # + R.toString(16).padStart(2, "0") + G.toString(16).padStart(2, "0") + B.toString(16).padStart(2, "0")
Key Assumptions & Scope:
  • Hex codes accept 3 or 6 hex digits, with or without a leading # symbol.
  • RGB channels are bounded strictly within the legal 8-bit integer range: [0, 255].
  • Standard sRGB color space is assumed across web CSS values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 3-digit and 6-digit HEX codes?

A 3-digit hex code like #RGB is shorthand for #RRGGBB, duplicating each character (e.g. #F0A expands to #FF00AA).

Why are RGB channels limited to 0–255?

Standard digital graphics allocate 8 bits (1 byte) of memory per color channel, yielding 2^8 = 256 discrete levels (from 0 to 255).

Can I pick colors directly using the native system color tool?

Yes. Clicking the color swatch launches your operating system or browser native color picker, automatically synchronizing HEX and RGB values.
